Wayward comment
[edit]He was released in 1924 by the British officials after he wrote a series of mercy petitions to the British.[11] He virtually stopped any criticism of the British regime after he was released from jail.[this line is not correct. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gaurav 9113 (talk • contribs) 15:56, 2 July 2024 (UTC)
Lede sentence
[edit]The first line of the article reads,"Vinayak Damodar Savarkar (pronunciationⓘ, Marathi pronunciation: [ʋinaːjək saːʋəɾkəɾ]; 28 May 1883 – 26 February 1966) was an Indian politician, activist and writer".How should a casual reader intrepret what being an "activist" means when it comes to Savarkar? Obviously the correct answer is independance activist.Afterall, he spent thirty-six years of his life at different levels of confinement for the cause of independance. Some people may not approve of his methods to achievement independance using violence earlier in his life, or his later Hindutva views but that should not stop us from treating him as an independance activist. As a child I only remember him being called Swatantra-veer Savarkar (translation, Savarkar, hero of independance).Anyhow, I look forward to comments by experienced fellow editors.Thanks. - Not a freedom fighter for most of his life thus it would be inaccurate to mention him as one. Orientls (talk) 05:11, 5 July 2024 (UTC)
- He was a student activist in Pune and London prior to being incarcerated from 1908 to 1937 in the cause of Indian freedom. He may have advocated terrorism to achieve that goal earlier in his life or been sectarian later in his life but he was a freedom fighter for indian independence nonetheless. I have heard of people getting pensions or free housing for just serving a few months in jail for taking part in the freedom struggle.Thanks.Jonathansammy (talk) 17:25, 7 July 2024 (UTC)

Done To be clear, either are acceptable English spellings, but the page had both present, so I harmonized them to your suggested version, as consistent with the name of the WP article. PianoDan (talk) 20:57, 30 July 2024 (UTC)
